Allen Eugene 'Red' Winthrop, of Elkville
Allen Eugene (Gene) "Red" Winthrop, 88, of Elkville, passed away at 8:43 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Gene was a graduate of Du Quoin High School. He worked for 41 years at Console's Truax Traer No. 2 Mine near Pinckneyville.
Gene was in the regular Army and the Army Reserves for a total of 16 years, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant.
His hobby was gardening, and he and his wife, Ruth, planted and tended many beautiful flowers over the years.
They shared their flowers and the produce from their gardens with many people. Gene was a member of the Elkville Baptist Church, the American Legion in Du Quoin and the UMW of A.
Gene was born on March 16, 1929, at Du Quoin, the son of John and Laura Lucy (Webb) Winthrop. He married Ruth Gladson on Aug. 4, 1950, at the Baptist Church in Pinckneyville and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Elkville, four children - Jeanne Korando (Mitch), Allen Winthrop (Jill) and Lisa Winthrop, all of Elkville and Jodi Atchison (Bobby) of Sesser; five grandchildren - Stacy Emling of Du Quoin, Mark Maple (Mandy) of Springfield, Mallory Bollinger (Jermaine) and Ellie Winthrop of Elkville, and Rebecca Schneider (Zach) of Painesville, Ohio; five great-grandchildren - Wade, Elaina and Caroline Romani of Du Quoin, Gracie Maple of Springfield and Slater Bollinger of Elkville; a nephew - Mike Winthrop and nieces - Janet (Winthrop) Mestemacher and Nancy (Winthrop) Stanley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers - Jack Winthrop and Bob Winthrop; a nephew - John Bob Winthrop, and two nieces - Marilyn (Winthrop) Reese and Elizabeth (Winthrop) Dacy.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at the Elkville Baptist Church in Elkville with Rev. Scott Slone officiating.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the Army National Guard.
Friends may make memorials to the Elkville Baptist Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the church and the funeral home.
