Janice Lee Matthews, formerly of Carrier Mills

CARRIER MILLS - On Aug. 15, 2017, the feast day of the Assumption of our Holy Mother, Janice Lee (Harrawood) Matthews, formerly of Carrier Mills, passed away after suffering a heart attack at her home.

Born Sept. 22, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Olive Bruce Harrawood. She was 77 years old. Her husband, James V. Matthews, was with her at the time. Attempts to revive her at her home and at the hospital were unsuccessful.

Survivors include her husband of over 60 years, James, plus five children, Stanley E. Matthews of Homestead, Florida, Daniel J. Matthews of Commerce, Georgia, Pamela J. Buie of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Kenneth J. Matthews of Newnan, Georgia, and Michael V. Matthews of Greensboro, Georgia.

Other survivors include her sister, Joyce Ann Harrawood of Franklin, North Carolina; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Janice was a member of Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church in Greensboro, Georgia. She was also a volunteer at the Christian Outreach Center in Greensboro, Georgia.

She grew up in the small southern Illinois town of Carrier Mills. In 1955, Janice was crowned Miss Saline County Illinois, but was unable to pursue the Miss Illinois contest since she was only 15 years old.

Janice was a housewife principally until the 1990s, when she began a career in market research in the Atlanta, Georgia area. In 1997 and 1998, she was a co-owner of the market-research firm, McConnell Research, and retired in 1999.

After retirement, her principal activity was volunteering with the church and the Christian Outreach Center. She was very active with her husband in the social functions throughout the Lake Oconee area.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, in Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, 6341 Lake Oconee Parkway, in Greensboro, Georgia, with Father Roberto Herrera officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad St., in Greensboro, Georgia. The rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Monday.
