Sondra Kay “Sonnie” Gates of Harrisburg

HARRISBURG - Sondra Kay "Sonnie" Gates, 73, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2017, at her residence.

She was born March 30, 1944, in Eldorado to the late Harold Holland and Geraldine (Whistle). She married Richard Gates, who survives.

Sonnie worked as a hairdresser, a homemaker and a farmer's wife.

She was a member of Harrisburg American Legion Woman's Auxiliary.

Sonnie loved her family and her friends. She also had a love for gardening and was a big Sudoku fan.

She was an accomplished cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends alike.

Sonnie had a special love for her goldfish and enjoyed spending time at her goldfish pond. Spending time at the beach, collecting shells and starfish, was another one of her favorite things to do.

In addition to her husband, survivors include four sons, Jim Hargrave of Galesburg, Carl (Pam) Gollihur of Raleigh, Randy (Kelley) Gates of Harrisburg and Richard "Rick" (Asta) Gates of Birmingham, Alabama; daughter, Rhonda Ramseyer of Cocoa, Florida; brother, Mike (Nancy) Holland of Eldorado; grandchildren, Shayna Moore of Auburn, Alabama, Alyssa (Logan) Howell of Gadsden, Alabama, Landon Richard Gates of Harrisburg, Taylor Ramseyer of Merritt Island, Florida, Luis (Lauren) Perez of Land O' Lakes, Florida, Lisette Perez of Tampa, Florida, and Derek (Felicia) Hargrave of Harrisburg; 12 great-grandchildren; and nephew, Mat Holland of Raleigh.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Carl Austin Gollihur.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, in Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado with the Rev. Scott Pilkington officiating. Burial was in Big Ridge Cemetery in Harrisburg. Visitation was from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Deaconess VNA Home Care and Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to Dr. Jackson, Martha, Lois, Paula and everyone else who helped during this time of sorrow.
