Marion Paul Hughes, formerly of Shawneetown

HARRISBURG - Marion Paul Hughes, 75, formerly of Shawneetown, and raised in Norris City, passed away at 10:30 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2017 at his residence with his loving family by his side.  

Paul was born on Feb. 5, 1942 in White County to Marion Parker Hall Hughes and Lillian Marie Bryant Hughes. Paul and Cynthia Kay Lambert were married on June 3, 1967. This June 3rd would have been their 50th wedding anniversary.  

Paul was a kind man who loved the Lord and would help anyone in need with finances or anything. He was a member of the Crossroads Bible Church at Norris City for 32 years and served as elder for many of those years.   

Paul graduated from Norris city-Omaha High School with the Class of 1959.  He graduated from Oakland City College in Indiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1963.  He graduated from SIU-Carbondale with a Master of Science in Education in September of 1967.  

When Paul started teaching in his early years, he taught at Carmi and Raleigh Grade Schools and was a coach at Raleigh. In 1966, he went to Shawneetown High School and taught driver's education and psychology, and then became a guidance counselor. He eventually became principal of the high school.   

Paul was at Shawneetown High School when the school graduated the last class there in 1990 and then started the new classes of Gallatin County Unit #7 Consolidated Schools, K-12, in Junction.  He stayed with Gallatin County schools as administrator until his retirement in 1997.  

Paul is survived by his loving wife and friend, Cindy; daughter, Andrea (Mike) Phalin of Harrisburg; grandsons, Connor Michael Phalin and Cooper Paul Phalin of Harrisburg;  brothers Bernard (Marilyn) Hughes of Norris City, Harold (Janie) Hughes of Mt. Carmel, Leon Hughes of The Plains, Ohio, Dean Hughes of Norris City; sister, Coradella (Jared) Baker of Newburgh, Indiana; brothers-in-law Duane (Suzette) Lambert, Harrisburg; Paul (Patti) Lambert, Harrisburg; sister-in-law Ellen (Fred) Bush, Harrisburg; and many special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.  

Paul was preceded in death by parents, Marion and Lillian Hughes; maternal grandparents, Rev. Luke and Cora Bryant; paternal grandparents, Thomas and Eunice Adella Hughes; brother David Carroll Hughes; sister-in-law, Pat Hughes; father and mother-in-law, Douglas and Marchetta Lambert.  

All services will be held at Crossroads Bible Church in Norris City.  Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 16.  Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, with Pastor Chad Everett officiating and Pastor Leo Hall.  Burial will be in Powell Church Cemetery in Norris City.  

Reed Funeral Home in Harrisburg is in charge of arrangements.  Donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
