William Carl “Bill” Dungey of Marion

MARION – William Carl "Bill" Dungey, 89, passed away at 5:53 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017, at his home in Marion.

William was born July 16, 1927, in Marion, the son of John William and Mary (Starrick) Dungey.

He married Sue Turner in Piggott, Arkansas, on Dec. 27, 1947. Together, they shared 69 wonderful years of marriage. She survives in Marion.

Mr. Dungey was a member of First Baptist Church for 81 years. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, who served as a Sea Bee.

Prior to his retirement, Bill had worked as a plasterer for 52 years. He was the second-oldest member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Marion Lodge 800, as well as a member of Plasterers Cement Masons Local.

In his early years, Bill loved gospel music and sang with John Goss every Sunday on WJPF radio. He enjoyed playing golf, and, when he was younger, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Dungey of Marion; daughter, Pam and Jack Smothers of Marion; grandson, Clint Smothers of Grays Lake; granddaughter, Shara Peyton of Johnston City; two great-grandchildren, Savana Smothers of Grays Lake and Boston Peyton of Johnston City; two brothers, Vernell (Inez) McAlpin of San Dimas, California, and Earl Ray and Delores Dungey of Marion; two sisters, Deana Baker of St. Charles, Missouri, and Marilyn and Keith Chapman of Paducah; and nine nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, in Marion First Baptist Church with Dr. Bob Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by Marion VFW and American Legion posts with assistance from the U.S. Navy ritual team. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
