Ruth DeVar

HARRISBURG -- Ruth Allen DeVar, 103, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016, in Eldorado Rehab and Healthcare.

She and her husband, Harvey DeVar, made their home in Harrisburg, where they were co-owners of Jackson's Drug Store on the Harrisburg square. She made many cherry cokes and peanut butter crackers for her loyal customers.

Ruth had been a faithful member of Harrisburg First Baptist Church for 80 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; son, Bill; brother, Aaron Allen; and sister, Vadah Karnes.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Marc (Carolyn) DeVar of Chicago and Lindsey DeVar of Chicago; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Mackenzie; nephew, Gary Karnes of Naples, Florida; and Linda and Jerald Sims of Harrisburg.

Ruth was well cared for three years by Brookstone Estates, and her remaining years at Fountainview Nursing Home in Eldorado. A special friend, Georgia Murphy, was also very important in Ruth's life.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, in Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg with Matt Winkleman officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Fountainview Activity Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
