With damage from Irene seeming much less than expected in areas such as Ocean City, Md., and New York City, business owners have been critical of local and state officials, saying they overreacted by issuing an order for mandatory evacuation. Government officials, on the other hand, said they wanted to err on the side of caution. Do you think the officials overreacted to the threat of Hurricane Irene?

We asked, "With school under way, do you think the students should learn cursive, or has the digital age made penmanship obsolete?"

You responded

  • 75 percent, "I think kids should learn cursive because it helps them develop fine motor skills, and it's just a part of our history."
  • 10 percent, "While I think cursive is fine for nostalgia reasons, I wonder if class time would be better spent teaching them how to type."
  • 15 percent, "What's the point of learning cursive? Kids should learn how to print neatly, but why have two different yet similar ways of writing? Ditch cursive!"
