Eldorado Elementary School Principal Steve Nelson is retiring at the end of this school year.
Nelson had intended to retire at the end of last school year, but decided to continue working and serve 25 years.
The board approved Nelson's retirement and thanked him.
"Steve, we do appreciate your years of service," board member Larry Parks said.
"You've done very well for the school system for a long time and we appreciate what you've done," board member Jason Kasiar said.
Following the meeting Nelson said he wants to spend more time with his wife, Mary, his parents and hobbies that include playing music and shaping wood into ink pens and other items.
"I really want to spend more time with Mary and travel, Mom and Dad and pursue my hobbies," Nelson said.
"They need somebody young and more energetic."
In his letter announcement his retirement Nelson wrote he began as a "young and scared 33-year-old" only knowing Superintendent Gary Siebert in Eldorado and the school district welcomed him as one of its own.
Nelson has no plans to leave Eldorado, he said.
The board approved fourth-grade teacher John Fry as Eldorado Elementary School principal for the 2012 and 2013 school year.
The board also approved Greg Goodley as athletic director effective next school year upon the retirement of current athletic director and assistant principal Beth Tierney.
Siebert said likely beginning at a point in February the board will host a series of three meeting regarding the issue of placing a 1-percent Saline County sales tax on the ballot to fund school building improvements. Siebert said he would like to hold a meeting on a Tuesday night, a Saturday afternoon and a Sunday afternoon.
