Galatia school board spent much of the open session during Thursday night's meeting planning for improvements to the grounds at the high school.
Superintendent Beth Rister said an Ameren engineer is to be at the school Monday to look at options for a light for the high school parking lot. She understands a new pole would cost $2,000, but a light may be able to be installed on an existing pole near the lot for much cheaper.
Not so cheap is a wheelchair lift for the high school. The company FGM has quoted a price of $40,975 for a lift to take wheelchair-bound students from an entrance at the junior high portion of the building to the middle floor and third floor. As a disabled student is expected to be attending the school in the future the lift is a priority.
Rister said the lift at the front entrance leading to the gym and a lift at the elementary school are not up to code, though they do function. The lift at the elementary would also cost about $40,000 to replace and the one at the high school would cost $16,100 to replace, she said.
The board voted to bid the installation of the new lift at the high school.
Board member Chuck Richey reported Tate Township Road Commissioner Steve Patterson filled in potholes in the parking lot at Richey's request and the lot is greatly improved. He is also hopeful an investigation he conducted with excavator Larry Braden of Raleigh may also result in stopping moisture entering the high school.
There was mold in the north and east side of the building. Richey and Braden -- with the agriculture class as audience -- used a tiling spade to dig down at one of the walls to see the wall's exterior of foam sprayed with what appears to be concrete is deteriorating below the soil level.
Richey said Braden proposed installing 26-inch agricultural drainage tile on the east side of the junior high portion of the high school and possibly on the north side and grading the soil to get water to move away from the building.
The board asked Richey to get a plan and a bid from Braden for the job.
During the meeting, the board:
-
Heard High School Principal Matt Hickam's report on a boys and girls cross country program for a total cost to the district of about $2,000 for a season. A team can consist of seven members. Board members recalled successful cross country teams in Galatia's past and agreed the spring sport sounded like something to plan with a goal of starting it in February.
-
Heard Hickam's plan to break up the sports banquet into fall, winter and spring banquets due to the large crowd overwhelming the capacity of the Galatia municipal building. He proposed a Dec. 2 fall banquet. Asking about food for the event board members agreed cookies and snacks were more appropriate than a full meal.
- Rister's report on an insurance investigator's thermographic review of circuit breakers that showed a hot spot in the high school kitchen. The board agreed to have an electrician check for a possible loose connection.
-
Invited separately Heather and Danny Tate, Patti Seeley and Todd and Samantha Parish into closed sessions. It was not made known in open session the reason for the private discussions. The agenda indicates there also was a "plan involving faculty" discussed in closed session. Following the second of the two closed sessions the board approved Emily Richey as assistant girls basketball volunteer and Amanda Littler as assistant high school cheerleading volunteer.
-
Approved a levy of $1,552,380, an increase of 4.51-percent over last year's, at a tax rate of 0.1311.
