The Carrier Mills Village Board met Tuesday night to discuss, among other matters, the official resignation of Chief of Police Billy Duncan.

Duncan's letter of resignation, read to the board by Mayor Louis Shaw, cited a policy change by the Sheriff's Department as the reason for the resignation.

Sheriff Keith Brown sent out an email August 26 prohibiting officers from having secondary employment with another police agency.

The policy change will affect several part-time officers in Carrier Mills who are also employed by the Sheriff’s Department in addition to Duncan.

The board entered a closed session to discuss the matter and reconvened about 45 minutes later.
Unexpectedly, Duncan withdrew his resignation in light of new information. The board unanimously accepted the withdrawal.

According to Shaw, the policy change was suspended due to a possible reconsideration by Sheriff Brown.
All similar matters were tabled until more is known about the new policy. However, the board will continue accepting applications for part-time police officers through Monday.
