Western Egyptian EOC hosts February 'mobile market'

Nearly 70 vehicles drove through the Mobile Market held Monday outside the Western Egyptian Economic Opportunity Center in Du Quoin, and volunteers gave each one big box of fresh food.

In addition to the WEEOC's twice-weekly food pantry, low-income residents are invited to the monthly mobile market, held the second Monday of each month at 317 S. Washington St. Vehicles are asked to start lining up between 10 and 10:30 a.m., and be prepared to have boxes placed in their vehicle trunk or the back seat. The market goes to 1 p.m., or earlier if the food runs out.

A truck from the St. Louis Area Food Bank arrives at about 9:30 a.m. the morning of the market, and volunteers unload it. Then, they prepare boxes for vehicles.

The next mobile market will be held on March 9.

Among Monday's foodstuffs were packages of fresh mushrooms. "We never know what we're going to get until it drops," said Ashley Greer, Perry County community service coordinator at the Western Egyptian EOC. Renee Trappe photo
