Dr. Roger Lyons to present at year's first Brown Bags and Books

HARRISBURG - The Harrisburg District Library and Friends of the Library will kickoff its program of monthly book reviews, "Brown Bag & Books." The season's first review will be at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 22 (the fourth Wednesday, as always). A free lunch will be served, and attendance is free.

Dr. Roger K. Lyons of Harrisburg will present the review of "The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution" by Eric Foner. Foner is a preeminent historian of the Civil War era. His book "The Fiery Trial" won the Pulitzer Prize. He is The Dewitt Clinton Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia University. "The Second Founding" is as timely now as its 19th century subject - the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution - which addresses abolition, citizenship, immigration and equal protection under the law, and voting rights during a period of presidential impeachment.

Reviews with lunch usually last about an hour. There will be a door prize drawing - a gift card to Morello's Restaurant and Catering in Harrisburg. The library is located at the corner of West Walnut and North Main streets in Harrisburg; phone number is (618) 253-7455.
