Cache River center to host upcoming events

CYPRESS - The Cache River Wetlands Center will host several upcoming events, including a celebration of Smokey Bear's 75th birthday.

From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, visitors may meet Smokey Bear, learn about fire safety, and hear the history of Smokey Bear, plus more. All ages are welcome.

Visitors can learn more about the common reptiles of southern Illinois on Saturday, Aug. 24. Join Tony Gerard as he presents "Reptiles in the Neighborhood" from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Cache River Wetlands Center near Cypress. At the indoor program view live reptiles, then join Gerard on a reptile excursion along Heron Pond Trail.

On Sunday, Aug. 25, those interested may learn more about iconic rivers across the globe. From 2 to 3 p.m., a program will show PBS "Rivers of Life," which will feature the wildlife and people who inhabit the river scape of the Amazon River.

From 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, visitors may join staff at Section 8 Wood Nature Preserve, Cache River State Natural Area for a stroll beyond the boardwalk. Have a new perspective of this wet habitat and rendezvous with the state champion water tupelo tree. Be prepared to walk in wet conditions.
