Gaye Lynn Thornton of Elkville

Gaye Lynn Thornton, 54, of Elkville, passed away at 5:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018 at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.

Gaye had been a ward clerk for 28 years at the St. Joseph Hospital in Murphysboro. She attended John A. Logan College for two years and then received her bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Gaye was a member of the Elkville Baptist Church and had been the nursery director at the church.

She was born Feb. 27, 1964 in Du Quoin, the daughter of John T. "Tom" and Glenna J. (Carter) Thornton.

She is survived by her parents of Elkville; sister, Gina Brown, and husband, Matt, of Du Quoin; nephew, Matthew Brown, and wife, Jaime, of Du Quoin; niece, Lindsay Sherrill, and husband, Derek, of Clarksville, Tennessee; and great-nieces and great-nephews Parker and Maddox Brown and Layna and Jacob Sherrill.

Gaye was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 19 at the Elkville Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Slone officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church.

Burial will be in the Elkville Cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the Elkville Baptist Church Nursery and will be accepted at the funeral home.
