SALINE COUNTY Craig wins for clerk; Murrie elected treasurer

SALINE COUNTY - Republican Saline County Board member Roger Craig won the Saline County Clerk and Recorder race Tuesday night.

Another Republican, incumbent Saline County Treasurer Jeff Murrie, was re-elected Tuesday with 6,276 votes over Democrat Danny Gibbs' 3,129 votes.

Craig thanked his supporters and had kind works for his opponent, Democrat Julie Dunn.

"I've been around a long time now, I know a lot of people and a lot of people trust me," Craig said. "Julie and her husband and I are friends. And while friendship only goes so far, I told Julie I was not going to do any mudslinging and she said she wasn't either. It was the most enjoyable election I've been in."

Craig also reiterated a campaign promise to restore Dunn and fellow former county clerk employee Kathy Cummins to their jobs in the county clerk's office.

Dunn and Cummins were fired by current county clerk Kim Buchanan in the spring. Other Saline County officeholders found jobs for both of them because of other employees leaving or retiring.

"You can't take 50 years of experience and throw it away," Craig said.

Craig beat Buchanan for the GOP nomination in March.

Craig received 5,065 votes compared to Democrat Julie Dunn's 4,347 votes, unofficial totals show.

Craig's win will create a Republican vacancy on the Saline County Board. Craig was re-elected to a four-year term on the county board in 2016. The county board will have to appoint a new member to finish the last two years of his term. All vote totals are considered unofficial until the votes are canvassed.
