Southeast Missouri sets career expo

The 2018 Fall Career Expo, sponsored by Career Services at Southeast Missouri State University, will provide a variety of opportunities to students in search of professional skill development.

The event will be held in the Student Recreation Center from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11.

"The Fall Career Expo provides an excellent space for students to build their networking skills and practice handshaking, elevator pitches and a host of other soft skills," said Dan Presson, director of Southeast's Career Services.

More than 130 organizations planning to attend the fair represent a local, regional, national and international spectrum. Students will be able to meet with potential employers and seek out internships.

Additionally, students aspiring to launch a career in the medical field will have the opportunity to explore employment opportunities at the first annual Healthcare Career Expo from 9 a.m.-noon on Friday, Oct. 12, in the Student Recreation Center.

The Healthcare Career Expo aims to help students learn about a variety of employment opportunities in the medical field, said Desma Reno, assistant professor and director of the RN-BSN program in Southeast's Department of Nursing.

"Students will have direct access to recruiters, and there will be exhibitors from a variety of health care organizations such as hospitals, long term care facilities and specialty health care organizations," she said.

Students attending either of these Expo events are expected to wear professional attire. According to Career Services, professional dress consists of a dress shirt, tie, slacks, dress shoes and socks for men. For women, the preferred dress is a dress blouse (nothing low cut, tight or that shows midriff), jackets/twin sweater sets, modest length skirts, dresses, pant suits and dress shoes. If students do not have these particular garments, collared shirts, khaki pants and dress shoes are acceptable.

Additionally, Career Services will host fashion police tables both days to provide students with information and tips for entering the workforce dressed professionally. Attendees are also encouraged to research companies prior to the event and to bring copies of their resume.

The Office of Career Services has a variety of events throughout the semester that are designed to equip students for success. Career Services can help students with cover letters and resumes. They offer services such as mock interviews and Walk-In Wednesdays for students that want to improve their professional skills.
