Man struck by truck near Gilster Mary-Lee plant

A Carbondale man was struck by a semitrailer truck as he crossed State Street at Stacey Street in Chester near the Gilster Mary-Lee Plant, according to Chester police.

Jose Hernandez, 57 was crossing the road at the intersection of State and Stacey street to report for work at the Chester Gilster Plant at 6:50 a.m. Sept. 11, when he was stuck by an eastbound 2000 Peterbilt tractor trailer truck. According to the driver and witnesses, Hernandez was crossing from the truck driver's passenger side, police said.

The truck's driver, William Hoffecker, 54, of Carbondale, told police he did not see Hernandez, likely due to the height of the truck. Witness statements are conflicting as to whethe Hoffecker's truck came to a complete stop or rolled through the stop, according to police.

Hernandez was treated at Chester Memorial Hospital and released later that day. Hoffecker was cited for failure to yield at a pedestrian in crosswalk, police said.
