MARION -- More than 3,000 union members and their families gathered at Marion's Rent One Park on Monday for the annual Labor Day Picnic.
"This is an opportunity for labor families that help build Southern Illinois throughout the year to have a day to celebrate what is means to be a union member," said Jason Woolard, former president of the Southern Illinois Central Labor Council.
Woolard said the event also provides opportunities for union members to visit with retirees "to reminisce about the old days," as well as discuss plans for the future.
The event included free food and drinks, a children's area with inflatables, goofy golf and face painting.
The baseball field was also open for play.
Several union members walked away with cash. ULICO and USA gave away $7,000 in their raffles. The IBEW solidarity raffle gave $45,000 in cash prizes, including a grand prize of $25,000.
The event ended with a fireworks show just after dusk.
