CHS to take part in 'Pigskin Points' competition

For the second straight year, Chester High School will participate in the Pepsi MidAmerica "Dr Pepper Pigskin Points" competition to win monetary prizes that benefit CHS.

Last year, Chester High School won a $500 cash prize as part of the random drawing portion of the program.

"We participated last year and even though we didn't win one of the three big prizes in the competition, we did win one of the random drawings for $500 just for participating," said CHS Principal Melissa Meyer.

Doug Deaton, director of marketing from Pepsi MidAmerica, explained participating high schools could win a portion of $60,000, by collecting special bottle caps on participating products and bringing them to the collection day event to be eligible to win.

Participating high schools are divided into three different divisions based on 2017-2018 enrollment. Each division will have three major prizes, including $10,000 first place, $5,000 second place, and $2,500 third place. The prize money can be used for whatever the winning schools decide.

In addition to the main prizes in each division, there will be random drawings at the collection day event to give non-prize winning schools the chance to win smaller prizes of $500. That is the prize Chester High School won last year.

Special edition maroon bottle caps will be marked on a variety of Pepsi MidAmerica products. The community can assist CHS collect the special edition bottle caps and deposit them in one of several collection barrels throughout Chester. Barrels are located at several locations in Chester, including the main entrance of W.O. Smith Field Football Field, Rozier's Grocery Store, Chester High School's Colbert Gym, and Chester Walmart. The collection barrels are clear/white and are labeled with the official contest signage. There is also a big Pigskin Points banner located alongside each barrel.

The contest will run through Dec. 14. Schools in Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Kansas are eligible to compete. All participating schools will have the opportunity to win $500 in the random drawings. Five schools in each area will win!

At the end of the collection period, school officials will combine all of the caps from all of the collection barrels in Chester and take them to the collection event at the "Redemption Day" event Saturday Dec. 15 in Marion.

Brands of Pepsi products which will contain the "Pigskin Points" maroon bottle caps include Dr Pepper, Diet Dr Pepper, Cherry Dr Pepper, Diet Cherry Dr Pepper, 7UP, Diet 7UP, Orange Crush, Grape Crush, Strawberry Crush, Squirt, and Crisp & Clear Water. Caps from 20oz, 16oz, 1 liter, and 2 liter bottles are eligible for the contest.

"I hope everyone in Chester will help us with this project," Meyer said. "The contest is easy and can help us win either one of the three big monetary prizes or one of the $500 random drawings."
