Shawneetown Lions give flags to third-graders

SHAWNEETOWN - The Lions Club of Shawneetown presented the "Flags for Third Graders" program for the seventh consecutive year at the Gallatin County Unit School District 7 on Thursday, March 29th.

This year there were just under 50 third grade students from the classrooms of Heather Pritchett, Courtney Smothers and Amy Knott. Lion Christy Short began by introducing herself and additional members of the Michael Hillegas Chapter NSDAR, Candy D. Evans and Janice Hall.

They shared with the students some of our flags history, some "do's and dont's" for displaying the flag, as well as discussing proper respect for the American flag.

This year's program was highlighted with information regarding Illinois Bicentennial and the difference in our flag from then to now. Pledge of Allegiance book markers were brought for each child, along with a card with American Flag facts. A 3x5-inch American Flag on a stick (American made) and a few handouts for coloring were also brought for the children to take home.

The Pledge of Allegiance bookmarks were donated by the Michael Hillegas Chapter NSDAR of Harrisburg. The Shawneetown American Legion Post 595 Ladies Auxiliary donated funds to purchase the American Flags on a stick. Lions International Clubs continue to reach out in their communities by engaging our youth, protecting our environment, sharing the vision and feeding the hungry.
