CFD responds to locomotive fire

Chester firefighters were called out Sunday afternoon to the report of a locomotive on fire.

The Union Pacific train was still in motion when the report was received and after some communication between UP officials and emergency responders, it was decided to stop the train near Menard Correctional Center.

Upon the train's arrival, it was discovered that the fire had contained itself to the engine compartment of the second locomotive.

"The motor blew up and burned out all of the fluids in it," said Chester Fire Chief Marty Bert. "It was already out when it arrived."

No injuries were reported in the incident, which was reported at 1:02 p.m. The train crew was evaluated by MedStar Ambulance as a precaution.

Firefighters were on scene for about 30 minutes.

"They knew it was on fire, but not when they noticed it," Bert said of the crew.
