Daughters of the Americas hold meeting

The monthly meeting of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court 795 was held June 12 at Haffner Hall in Du Quoin.

The opening prayer led by the officers was the End of the Year Ceremony followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Brenda Sims welcomed Heide Fiorino's granddaughter, Isabella.

Carol Collins read the minutes. The treasurer's report was provided by Margie Born. Liz Thompson was absent because she was visiting family, and Lisa Mohr's aunt, Helen Keiner, passed away.

Father Joseph sent a thank you for his birthday gift. Services were held recently for long time CDA member Jo Ann Wisniewski. The National CDA is looking for anyone interested in being the Circle of Love chairman. Reports turned in are reviewed, and the best is turned into the National Court for consideration.

Brenda Sims provided health updates on CDA members and their families. The CDA minutes are now being published in the Du Quoin Call and the Du Quoin Weekly.

Margie Born read a letter from the St. Bruno's students who benefited from their donation to help with their mission trip/retreat.

According to Phyllis Majewski and Dorothy Prusacki, the quilters are working on a big project. Margie Born is planning to try her hand at quilting.

Members are still collecting money for the missions during the monthly meetings. After this meeting, monies collected will be sent.

Kelly Paxton reported that the youth are on hiatus for the summer. There is not a lot going on this time of year.

On Saturday, June 24, Sacred Heart will be hosting a celebration to honor the namesake of the church after the 5 p.m. Mass. A dinner of mostaccioli, salad, drinks and dessert will be provided.

Bishop Braxton's birthday is June 28. He will be 73. The office ill be closed July 4. The dinners with Father are going well. Father's friends from Kenya will be attending Mass July 16. Aug. 4 will be Sacred Heart's night to furnish desserts for the American Legion fish fry to benefit the Clothes Closet.

Liz Wynn suggested a group going to see the Church Basement Ladies in St. Louis. They may coordinate with Pinckneyville and Du Bois courts. More information will follow. Edna Bailey offered her screened-in patio for a casual outing.

Special year membership pins and life membership pins and plaques were presented by Regent Brenda Sims. They were 70 years, Geraldine Kowzan; 65 years, Margie Epplin; 60 years, Dorothy Suchomski; 45 years, Esther Balch, Cyrilla Prusacki, Chris Ritter Gauvain and Gail Taylor; 40 years, Frances Furlin; 35 years, Carolyn Johnson and Kathryn Norris; 15 years, Margie Born and Phyllis Majewski; and five years, Carol Collins and Carolyn Williams.

Life membership honors were presented to Geraldine Kowzan, 70 years; Marge Explain, 65 years; Dorothy Suchomski, 60 years; Martha Roznowski, 60 years in 2018; and Dorothy Prusacki, 55 years in 2018.

The summer birthday lists were read. In June are Heide Fiorino, Norma Martin, Dorothy Bailey, Sharon Martin, Doris Kern, Lisa Mohr and Kelly Paxton. In July are Rosemary Stein, Pat Ciganovich, Brenda Sims and Chris Hutson. In August are Margaret Explain, Margie Born, Phyllis Majewski and Gina Cushman.

Carol Collins read the prayer list. Margie Born led the closing prayer. Betty Moss won the 50/50. Officer's raffle prize winners were Norma Martin, Liz Wynn, Margie Born, Esterh Balch, Edna Bailey, Kelly Paxton and Dorothy Prusacki.
