Cave-In-Rock Ferry to halt noon to 3 p.m. Saturday

CAVE-IN-ROCK – The Cave-In-Rock ferry will halt all operations from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The ferry will be closed to allow employees to attend the funeral of Shirley Lewis, who died Tuesday. Shirley and her husband Lonnie Lewis have operated the ferry for more than 20 years. Shirley was the manager of the ferry and the family's farming operation.

The Cave-In-Rock ferry connects KY 91 with Illinois 1 across the Ohio River between Crittenden County, Ky. and Hardin County. It normally operates from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and carries about 500 vehicles across the river on average each day.

The ferry is a joint project between the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Visitation for Shirley Lewis will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Potters Church in Cave-In-Rock and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, with service starting at 1 p.m. at the church.
