H'burg residents: renew ATV/UTV permits in May

HARRISBURG – Harrisburg Police Chief David Morris said he wants to remind city residents who have permits to drive off-road vehicles on city streets that it's nearly time to renew permits.

"Beginning the first of May, residents may start applying to renew their permits," Morris said.

The process begins at City Hall, in the office of City Clerk Sally Wofford.

Wofford said residents who wish to obtain a permit must pay the permit fee of $100, which is an annual amount. The city clerk's office then provides an application, which is filled out with the help of the police department.

A person wishing to obtain a permit must show that the vehicle meets the city's criteria for being driven on streets, including the installation of turn signals. In addition, proof of insurance is required.

<div style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Non-highway vehicles, by ordinance, must have a horn, brakes and brake lights, turn signals, a steering wheel apparatus, seat belts, a rear-view mirror, a "slow-moving vehicle" emblem on the rear of the vehicle, a headlight that emits a white light visible from a distance of 500 that remains illuminated when the vehicle is in operation, a tail lamp that emits red light visible from at least 100 feet from the rear of the vehicle which must be illuminated when the vehicle is in operation, and "reflectorized" warning devices in the front and rear of the vehicle.</div>

"Basically, they pay the fee, get the paperwork, contact Harrisburg Police Department and we'll get the permit to them," Morris said.
