Scare on the Square Thursday in Harrisburg

Why is this Thursday evening special for kids of all ages in Harrisburg, you ask?

Because you can dress up like a blue Cubbie bear, a gray mare, or even a white hare on his way to the fair. Without a doubt, people will stare at what you wear, but you won't care, because you have just won a dare at the "Scare on the Square."

The fourth annual Halloween extravaganza gets under way with trick-or-treating from local businesses from 5-6:30. A costume contest will follow at 6:30 with prizes for Pre-Kindergarten all the way through high school. There will also be a dog costume contest at 7:15 for puppies and medium-to-large-size canines. Judges for the costume contest are Bethany Shaw, Angela Rowe, and Courtney Drone.

This year marks the third year of the event. It is sponsored by the Saline County Chamber of Commerce.

Executive Director Danielle Bradley said more than 20 business owners have agreed to participate this year. They will pass out candy, fruit, and other gifts. The chamber will also give each trick-or-treater a bag from Long John Silver's containing some candy, fruit, gift certificates, and tooth brushes.

"This is my first year with the Scare on the Square, and I am really looking forward to it," Bradley said. "I am expecting a pretty big turnout Thursday We have been in contact with all the schools of the county and there has been a lot of conversation on Facebook about it, too."
