Chalk one up for student art; Harrisburg hosts annual contest
High school students from across the area got their hands dirty on a cold fall day at Harrisburg Middle School on Friday for the 10th Annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition.
This year's competition featured more than 100 students from eight schools; Harrisburg, Vienna, Anna-Jonesboro, Cobden, Goreville, Galatia, Pope County, and Johnston City.
Participation requirements differ at each school to qualify for the competition, but at Harrisburg, students must be a member of the Art Club, or currently taking an art class.
A wide variety of subjects and styles of art were represented by students, from pop art to Netflix's original series "Stranger Things."
"Everyone seems to enjoy this event, as long as we're out here in this nice weather, with nice art to look at," HHS art teacher and Art Club sponsor Natalie Jones said.
Four awards were given out at the end of the day. They include: Teacher's Choice: Hannah Stark and Hannah Fuller of Anna-Jonesboro; First Place: Sierra Harrington, Bradley Frailey, Braden Cummins, and Ashley Church of Harrisburg; Second Place: Bethany Toler and Jeanlu Peak of Galatia; and Third Place: Wyatt Graves, Baylee Eaves, Haley Burden, and Tiffany Racey of Vienna.
