Police name officer shot Sunday

Three-year veteran of force released from hospital Tuesday

The hunt continues for the assailant who shot a Carbondale police officer Sunday.

As of late Tuesday, police reported that no additional information concerning the investigation was available other than the name of the officer and that he was released from the host.

"After conferring with the family of the officer involved in the (Sunday) shooting incident, the city of Carbondale Police Department has received permission to identify the injured officer."

The officer is 26-year-old Trey Harris, who has been with the department for more than three years.

The Department reported on Tuesday that Harris has been released from the St. Louis area hospital where he was treated after first receiving care in Carbondale.

"Officer Harris will require further medical treatment moving forward, but we feel blessed to know he is able to further his recovery at home," the department reported in its update.

The department also said that according to Harris' family no official fundraising efforts have been started. Earlier in the day, such fundraisers started show up on the Internet. But none have been authorized by the family, Carbondale police said.

"Based on the number of inquiries received by the police department, and in consultation with the family, we request at this time that anyone wishing to donate monetarily to Officer Harris bring those donations to the Carbondale Public Safety Building, with checks payable to 'CPD Injured Officers Fund,'" police said.

Funds may also be mailed to City of Carbondale Police Department, "CPD Injured Officers Fund," 501 South Washington St., Carbondale, Ill. 62901

"The Department will hold those funds in escrow and the funds, in their entirety, will be provided directly to Officer Harris or to an official fundraising account if/when one is established," police said
