Dorothy May (Bryson) Smith Hewitt

Dorothy May (Bryson) Smith Hewitt, age 87 of Harrisburg, passed away at 3:00 PM, Monday, July 18, 2016 at her residence in Harrisburg.

Dorothy was born on Friday, May 24, 1929 in Old Shawneetown, Illinois to the late Neal Theodore Bryson and Mary Francis (Parker) Bryson. She married Ralph Clayton Smith on February 13, 1946 and he preceded her in death on May 3, 1980. She married Neal Hewitt in August of 1984 and he preceded her in death in October of 1994. She was a homemaker and Baptist by faith. Dorothy was an avid hunter, fisher, and gardener.

Dorothy is survived by four children: son, Rhemis "Jimmy" Smith of Harrisburg; son, Chester Dale Smith and wife Bertha Jane of Carrier Mills; daughter, Marilyn Ruth Stiles and husband Mike of Harrisburg; son, David Wayne Smith of Killeen, Texas; sixteen grandchildren: Jameson Smith and wife Crystal of Longmont, Colorado; Shelly Rae Woods of Harrisburg; Dawn Marie Woolard and husband Dennis of Wingo, Kentucky; Taunya Kay Redwine and husband Lyndol of Clinton, Kentucky; Joseph Michael Smith and wife Kim of Harrisburg; Tommy Lee Smith of Carrier Mills; Ashley Marie Gifford and husband Jarret of Harrisburg; Tammy Sue Hall and husband Mike of Jasper, Indiana; Christopher Lee Cowan of Harrisburg; Danny D. Williams of Belleville, Illinois; Brandi Dawn Rossell of Key West, Florida; Jinné Linde Figueroa of Key West, Florida; Angela Jeffrie SeRine of Key West, Florida; Matthew Dale Smith of Houston, Texas; Tiffany Smith of Killeen, Texas; and Dylon Dakota Smith of Killeen, Texas; forty-one great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and numerous great-great-great grandchildren; sister Bernedia Young of Phoenix, Arizona, brother, Emile Bryson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, daughters, Loretta Rose Williams, and Brenda Louise Fortner, granddaughters, Tracy Lynn Fitzgerald, and Myra Celeste Gillespie, and brothers and sisters, Tommy Bryson, Margaret Baldwin, Ray Wolful, Rita Carmen, Neal Bryson, Jr., Velda Pierce and five infant brothers and sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 5 PM, Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Rev. David Smith will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to Bankston Fork Baptist Church Building Fund or the VA Nursing Home at Marion and envelopes will be available at the cemetery.
