SIC players charged with retail theft

Three members of the Southeastern Illinois College women's basketball team are now face criminal charges. They were arrested last week and charged with shoplifting.

According to arrest warrants filed with the Saline County clerk on Thursday, police stopped Shadreuna D. Johnson, Brittney S. Smith and Rakkia C. Curtis on Dec. 8 for knowingly carrying away merchandise, in excess of $300, from Wal-mart on S. Commerical Street in Harrisburg. The actual charge is "Retail theft (over $300)."

The three were not jailed at the time. However, the arrest warrants cite that each woman was to be held on a $10,000 bail upon arrest.

Southeastern Illinois College's Dean for Student Services and Enrollment, Chad Flannery, was contacted and said he could not comment on the case nor what may be the result of the arrest on the women's ability to play.

According to the student handbook, however, any violation of the code of conduct is subject to judicial review and disciplinary decisions are made on a case by case basis.
