Christmas concert takes audience to the movies

The annual Chester Grade School 1st-4th grade Christmas program had a theme this year, "Christmas at the Movies," and featured songs from Christmas movies past and present.

The event was held at the Chester High School Colbert Gym. Sue Colonel, CGS music director, created the show and local accompanist, Vicky Beers, provided the piano accompaniment.

Principal Tim Lochhead welcomed everyone to the concert. All four grades joined together to lead the audience in the singing of the "The Star Spangled Banner" followed by the "Concert Etiquette Song," which educated all attendees regarding proper behavior while at a concert.

Fourth-graders came center stage before each song was performed to tell a bit about its relationship to the Christmas holidays and movies that featured the songs.

The first graders performed "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." Grades 1 & 2 then combined for "We are Santa's Elves". The 3rd and 4th graders combined to sing the favorite "Jingle Bell Rock." Grade 3 was featured on the next song, "Somewhere In My Memory."

Next up the entire group united to sing, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

"You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch," by the 3rd and 4th grades, brought smiles to both musicians and spectators.

The focus again shifted to the left side of the staging area where the 1st and 2nd graders performed "Holly Jolly Christmas."

The 2nd graders were up next with "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree."

The final feature of the concert was, "When Christmas Comes to Town" which the 4th graders handled with great skill.

To close the program, all four grade levels stood to wish everyone a merry Christmas by singing, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."

"I was really happy this year with the performances," Sue Colonel said afterward. "The students worked hard and behaved very well throughout the show. I am proud of their singing and related movements to those songs and hope everyone thoroughly enjoyed this year's concert!"
