Elizabeth Woodworth: It's time to complete middle spring planting

After the April 11 high-pressure system crosses the country, complete middle spring planting. Fruit trees are in budding or in flower through the Midwest. Throughout the country's midsection, black and gray morel mushrooms come up at this time of the months. A major increase in the average daily amount of sunlight now occurs throughout the country; a rise from early April's 50/50 chance for sun or clouds up to a brighter 70 percent chance for clear or partly conditions. The Saline County Homemakers will be celebrating their 100th anniversary with a party on April 28. The event will be held at the McKinley Avenue Church Family Life building, 2-4 p.m. There will be a short program at 2:15 featuring a photo montage, a brief history and recognition of former members. After the program, guests are encouraged to peruse the exhibits of pictures and crafts made in unit and county meetings and at Homemakers camp. Former members and community friends are invited to join us as we celebrate our heritage. Birthday cake will be served.

Today, April 10, is National Siblings Day. Tuesday morning are too hectic for non-normal breakfast. On Saturday when thing are more relaxed, let the kids make breakfast for each other.

On April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. What an era of wonder and awe that introduced. I loved our space program, disasters and all. Last year The Boy took me to Cape Canaveral. We went to the movie. I know he hoped no one was watching his mother cry. I realized that he wasn't as into it as I. But he was more interested than I in the space shuttles. I realized that I am a child of the orbital flights; he, a child of the shuttles and Kidlet will be a child of Mars. I hope it is as exciting for her as it has been for me.

The last program of the SIC Cultural Arts series will be Ivas John who will present works for the acoustic guitar. The program is 7 p.m. April 13 in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center. This will be a coffee concert. Tickers, $10 adults, $5 students.

In honor of National Library Week, let the kids have some gummy bookworms as a treat.

Several times I have read the agreement between the Saline County Board and the county clerk. I really don't understand; seems there is a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between the clerk's and treasurer's offices. I am not sure that the agreement makes things right, just seems to make the County Board look incompetent. It is time to get things right and move on to the business of the county. Infighting doesn't work and doesn't become us.

Win or lose, Loyola has made the Missouri Valley Conference a force to be reckoned with. Am sure that a few non-winners are wondering where they can get a nun mascot.

I so agree with the Pennsylvania sheriff's office who has a warrant out for Punxsutawney Phil. He is accused of deception. His prediction of six weeks of winter has expired, yet a spring storm brought more snow to the area. The poster describes Phil as having brown and gray hair, brown eyes and sharp teeth. Hope they find him. I, for one, want him tried for his crime! This is getting to be ridiculous. I can remember Easter snows, but it time for spring. I do believe that we are not going to have spring; the next time it is warm it will be 90-plus. And I am tired of rain!

Remember, put some of your garden funds away so you can have fun at the Eldorado Garden Club's truck load sale. Hopefully by then, the weather will be ok for planting.

Have you ever been to a cereal restaurant? Real cereal. Can find them in Colorado, Kansas, California, and Kellogg's 5000-square foot facility in New York City. Not close, make your own. Set out a variety of cereals and toppings, such as Frosted Mini Wheats with marshmallows, chocolate chips, graham cracker pieces and caramel sauce; Rice Krispies with strawberries and pecans; Froot Loops with crystallized ginger and yogurt chips. I think not. I eat plain Cheerios like a toddler, just as they come from the bag. I flew out of a small airport in Arkansas this week, was told that I needed to put any food in my carry-on in a tray to go through screening. Since this was new, I had to hunt for what I had: peanut butter crackers, maple cream eggs and a bag of Cheerios. That one got a strange look. I felt like she was wondering what I had done with the child those were for.

Remember clean clothing and usable house hold items for the 4Cs give away in May.
