Du Quoin Garden Club has been busy about town

The Du Quoin Garden Club of District VII Garden Clubs of Illinois held its Aug. 22 meeting at the home of Sherry Gravot.

Jean Bullock, president, opened the meeting by introducing and welcoming new member Amy Williams. Roll call was taken, with 18 members answering, "Do you have pineapple sage growing in your garden?" Only one member did. The July minutes were read and corrected. The treasurer's report was given. Correspondence was received from the Southern Illinois Women's Health Conference asking if the club would make a table floral donation.

Bullock thanked the members watering the Blue Star Memorial plantings. Plantscape Garden Center donated the red petunias for the memorial plantings. New award forms will be online this month. The scrapbook is up to date, and the history committee will meet soon. The condolence committee will send a card to Gail Taylor.

Bullock thanked all those who came for the book dedication at the library. A day trip to Brenda Tripp's zinnia garden in Anna is planned for Thursday, Sept. 21. Members are to meet at Fenton's south of town at 9 a.m. After the tour, members will lunch at Giant City Lodge.

In new business, the District VII Annual Fall Meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 26. It will be hosted by the Garden Gate Garden Club of Benton.

Verna Bastien gave the horticulture minute on dragonflies. Betty and Jean displayed their photographs that won awards at the recent District VII Flower Show.

The meeting was closed with the Benediction. The program was "Trash to Treasure." Members told how they used recycled items in the garden.

Co-hostesses Pam Swallers and Joey Harsy served cupcakes and ice cream. The September meeting will be held Sept. 28 at BJ's Garden Inn. Heidi Fiorino will be the hostess.
