The Rev. Dan Whitfield formally commissioned five local missions on April 23 during Mission Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg. Each mission is rooted by members of the congregation.

The missions include Fowler Bonan Foundation's Clothes for S.I. Kids; 4C's Food Pantry and Homeless Shelter; The Graves Foundation; Saline County Habitat for Humanity; and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Saline County.

The congregation learned a little about the work of each mission and how each organization originated. The church also approved a grant in support of each mission.

"It's amazing the scope of God's mission work stemming directly from our church members," Whitfield said. "We need to pause and reflect on that, and that's what our service Sunday was all about."

Whitfield said the church's mission statement is a fitting reminder of its reputation for service: "Serving God by Serving Others with Openness, Charity and Faith in Christ."
