Carrier Mills has a new Village Board member.
After a long secret session, members of the board on Tuesday approved appointment by Mayor Louis Shaw of Carleen Sanderson to the Village Board.
Sanderson replaces Jim Swan, who resigned his board position to become the village’s street and alley superintendent.
The board had, on Oct. 11, accepted the resignation of then-Street and Alley Superintendent Steve Gilbert, who had recently accepted a new job in Harrisburg.
Two individuals, Robert Wolf and Shawn Kueber, asked the board why they were not considered for the street position.
Wolf was told there was a conflict with village policy as a relative was working in the department and Kueber was told he did not meet a specific area of qualification for the position.
Finances
Board member Tracy Felty delivered a piece of bad financial news to the body.
He reported the village currently is $30,000 over budget.
The cause, he said, is the high cost of fuel.
He also reported the state’s indebtedness to the village is high.
Carrier Mills currently is owed $32,000 by the state.
Also during the meeting:
- The board tabled considering a tax levy ordinance because Village Attorney Fred Turner said there is an error in calculations he, so far, has been unable to find. The levy increase is expected to be 4.99 percent.
- The board gave an OK to the funding measure for the upcoming year’s street program, funded from the state-collected Motor Fuel Tax fund. Funding was set at $80,000.
- Board member Greg Prince reported the village police program of handing out glow sticks at Halloween was popular. The mayor said he had 427 children call at his home on trick-or-treat night. “Everybody seemed to have a really good time,” Prince said.
- The board determined to allow rental of the Community Center on a split of 80-20 with 20 percent of money from an individual conducting exercise classes going to the village. The formula is based on the formula used by the Harrisburg Township Park District, Shaw said. Passage of the motion carried one caveat: Felty made the motion contingent on the village dedicating the 20 percent share toward purchase of an automated external defibrillator for the Community Center.
- The board authorized Shaw to continue discussions with an individual who wants to donate the old Carrier Mills Lions Club flag and a painting to the village for display at the Community Center.
- Christmas bonuses were granted by the board to village workers: Each full-time worker receives $175; part-time workers, $100; and two seasonal workers, $75 each.
- In a second seasonal item, it was announced Santa Claus will be in Carrier Mills at 6 p.m. Dec. 10.
