Old Settlers Days in Galatia returns this weekend with free rides, new mural

GALATIA - Galatia's annual hometown festival, Old Settlers Days, kicked off Thursday, and there's a new mural to celebrate the occasion.

According to Galatia Historical Society member Mary Finley, those attending Saturday will have the chance to peruse the inside of the society's building.

"The building will be open from noon to 4 p.m.," Finley said. "We're working on displays, and we aren't quite finished, but we wanted people to be able to see it."

Finley said the organization acquired the building, on Main Cross Street, last year.

What's more visible to those attending Old Settlers Days is the building's new mural, depicting historic scenes from the village.

The 45th Annual Old Settlers Days also again features free carnival rides. Galatia businesses, churches and other organizations have picked up the cost of carnival rides, which has boosted the popularity of the event, Finley said.

Also, the Galatia Lions club has an auction starting at 1 p.m. featuring more than $10,000 worth of donated goods.
