Whippoorwill or chuck-will's-widow?

By Brian DeNeal
Whippoorwill.JPG
Two goatsuckers on the driveway, no doubt interrupted in some kind of mating ritual. They are either whipporwills or chuck-will's-widows, or maybe even one of each, but they were not singing so I can't tell them apart.

Whippoorwills and chuck-will's-widow are in the goatsucker family of birds more often heard than seen, and even more rarely seen actually sucking goats.
