ELIZABETHTOWN -- Julie Smith, editor of the Hardin County Independent newspaper in Elizabethtown sends this account of the rat snake that has been patroling around her building looking for mice. The snake as of yesterday had begun its third week around the building. Warmer weather this week will probably draw out more snakes.

Robert Hill of San Diego, Calif., and formerly of Harrisburg has learned of the recent local interest in L.O. Trigg, founder of the Eldorado Daily Journal and leader of the Ozark Tours across the Shawnee Hills. Hill joined the tours in 1940 as one of the Red Caps, boys who acted as bearers for the men's camping gear. Hill shared some of his anecdotes in an e-mail message Thursday.
MOUNTAIN TOWNSHIP -- Has anyone ever heard of daffodils in January? I have, now, since I saw two blooms on a daffodil clump in the backyard Monday.
