More awards for area ballers

The post season awards and accolades continue to pour in for area hoopsters.<br />It was announced over the weekend that several from the south were named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-State Teams, including two from Harrisburg and one from Gallatin County.<br />Hailey Chubb, a junior at Gallatin County High School, was named to the Second Team. This coming on the heels of picking up an All-State honorable mention last week.<br />Chubb led the Hawks to a regional title and averaged 33 points per game. She currently has 2,250 points at Gallatin County.<br />The third team featured featured Harrisburg's Matty Hawkins, Sesser-Valier's Hannah Garascia and Fairfield's Jevin Shreve.<br />Hawkins averaged 11 points per game and 11 rebounds a game for Jake Stewart and was named to the AP All-State Honorable Mention team last week. Hawkins, at 6-foot-2, has the school record for most blocks in a season and career. She is listed at 18th on the IHSA all-time block list with 385. She was named All-Tournament in the Harrisburg Preview Tournament to start the season. <br />Garascia was named to the AP All-State Second Team last week as the Rend Lake recruit averaged 19 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and four assists per game for a Rick Metcalf team Garascia was recruited by Southeast Missouri State University, Rend Lake, John A. Logan and Wabash Valley Junior College and Lindenwood, before deciding on RLC. She was named MVP of the Black Diamond Conference and was All-Tournament at Sparta and West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic. She was also WSIL TV Player of the Week (Boys & Girls). Last year, Garascia was All-South and 3rd Team All-State IBCA. <br />IBCA Fourth Team featured Harrisburg's Jessica Hopson, Goreville's Ashlyn Darnell, Carmi-White County's Abby Vaughan and Sesser-Valier's Jalyn Haley.<br />Hopson, a junior, averaged 14 points per game for Bulldogs. Like Hawkins, Hopson tied the school record for 3-pointers in a game with seven. The Tennessee transfer was named All-Tournament at the Harrisburg Preview Tournament, Herrin Holiday Hoops Tournament and Eldorado Mid-Winter Tournament. <br />West Frankfort's Morgan Griffith was named to the IBCA First Team, this after being named to the AP All-State First Team last week, where she was a unanimous selection<br />Griffith averaged 33.34 points per game for Matt Hampleman ball club that lost in the Class 2A regional championship to Harrisburg. Griffith&#160; broke Bob Brown's 55-year-old single season scoring record (733). She also broke the boys and girls' scoring record at West Frankfort. She was named to the Harrisburg Preview All-Tournament Team, as well as, being named the MVP of the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic. Griffith was named Athlete of The Week by WSIL TV and has signed scholarship papers with Missouri S&T. Last season, Griffith was an Associated Press 1st Team and was named 3&4A All-State. She was 1st Team News Gazette All-State and an IBCA 2nd Team player. <br />Those named to the Special Mention team were: Anna-Jonesboro's Elle Basler, Fairfield's Lauren Vaughn, Nashville's Paige Kasten and Karly Stanowski, as well as, Harrisburg sophomore Lotte Miller.<br /><br />Michael Dann covers prep and college sports for the Harrisburg Daily Register and Eldorado Daily Journal.
