By MICHAEL DANN
mdann@dailyregister.com
HARRISBURG - There was some local flavor in the Associated Press Class 1&2A All-State girls' basketball team, released Thursday afternoon.
The biggest contribution from southern Illinois came from West Frankfort's Morgan Griffith, who was a unanimous selection for First Team.
Griffith averaged 33.34 points per game for a Matt Hampleman ball club that lost in the Class 2A regional championship to Harrisburg. Griffith broke Bob Brown's 55-year-old single season scoring record (733). She also broke the boys and girls' scoring record at West Frankfort. She was named to the Harrisburg Preview All-Tournament Team, as well as, being named the MVP of the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic. Griffith was named Athlete of The Week by WSIL TV and has signed scholarship papers with Missouri S&T. Last season, Griffith was an Associated Press 1st Team and was named 3&4A All-State. She was 1st Team News Gazette All-State and an IBCA 2nd Team player.
"She worked very hard to be the player she is. It's nice to see her get the recognition for all that hard work," Hampleman said.
Sesser-Valier's Hannah Garascia was named to the Second Team as the Rend Lake recruit averaged 19 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and four assists per game for a Rick Metcalf team. Garascia was recruited by Southeast Missouri State University, Rend Lake, John A. Logan and Wabash Valley Junior College and Lindenwood, before deciding on RLC. She was named MVP of the Black Diamond Conference and was All-Tournament at Sparta and West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic. She was also WSIL TV Player of the Week (Boys & Girls). Last year, Garascia was All-South and 3rd Team All-State IBCA.
Grascia's teammate Jaylin Haley and Vienna's Lindsey Holhubner were named to the Class 2A Honorable Mention team and joined the Harrisburg duo of Matty Hawkins and Jessica Hopson.
Hawkins averaged 11 points per game and 11 rebounds a game for Jake Stewart. Hawkins, at 6-foot-2, has the school record for most blocks in a season and career. She is listed at 18th on the IHSA all-time block list with 385. She was named All-Tournament in the Harrisburg Preview Tournament to start the season.
Hopson, a junior, averaged 14 points per game for Bulldogs. Like Hawkins, Hopson tied the school record for 3-pointers in a game with seven. The Tennessee transfer was named All-Tournament at the Harrisburg Preview Tournament, Herrin Holiday Hoops Tournament and Eldorado Mid-Winter Tournament.
In Class 1A, the lone representative from southern Illinois was Gallatin County junior Hailey Chubb.
Chubb led the Hawks to a regional title and averaged 33 points per game.
