Fair's credit cut off; Du Quoin to pay for 1,000 gallons of diesel

A Farm Service fuel truck carrying 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel to power tractors and end loaders that will prepare the Southern Illinois Center for four upcoming events will arrive at the Du Quoin State Fair on Thursday.

But, the bill for the fuel--estimated at $2,050--will be sent to the City of Du Quoin.

Mayor Guy Alongi conveyed to the council his attendance at this past weekend's bull riding nationals at the SI Center. There, he was met by fair staff members who indicated that the fair's credit with Farm Service has been cut off because the state won't pay its bills.

No fuel. No events at the SI Center. Alongi told the council Monday night he was using his authority as mayor to pay for the fuel because events at the fair equate to money coming into Du Quoin's economy. He said the money from motel taxes alone for the four events would offset the cost of the fuel. Members of the Du Quoin council were quick to concur and support the mayor's decision. The Department of Agriculture and Rep. Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) have been advised of the city's contribution to maintaining ONLY the SI Center through the state's budget impasse.
