A clearer picture: New CT scanner at Marshall Browning

To offer patients a more comfortable CT exam with lower radiation dose, Marshall Browning Hospital has installed the Aquilion™ PRIME 40 CT system from Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. The Aquilion PRIME 40 allows for a better patient experience while providing clinicians with high-quality images for accurate diagnoses.

"We installed this system to offer our patients the most advanced CT technology, so that our patients don't have to choose between safety and comfort," explained Kimbra Schafer, Director of Imaging, Marshall Browning Hospital. "With the industry leading image reconstruction times, our patients have access to faster, more comfortable procedures that don't compromise the information necessary for their treatment."

The Aquilion PRIME 40 features a large bore (78 cm), advanced dose reduction technology (AIDR 3D) and a high-capacity couch (660 Ibs.), contributing to an overall better imaging experience. Additionally, the system solves clinical challenges by improving workflow and offering consistent results for a range of patients, from pediatric to bariatric.

"Aquilion PRIME 40 allows our customers the scalability to expand their offerings as the needs of their patient population grow. As the only system capable of going from 40 to 80 to 160 slices without replacing hardware, customers can choose the right solution to fit their needs." said Satrajit Misra, senior director, CT Business Unit, Toshiba.

In addition to Computed Tomography (CT), Marshall Browning Hospital's Imaging Department offers full-service imaging including Nuclear Medicine (ie Stress Tests), Bone Density Scans,

There are some important footnotes to this story:

- The investment is large, about $506,000 for the new Toshiba CT scanner and another $200,000 for the new x-ray equipment in the radiology department.

- Marshall Browning Hospital uses the same Cape Girardeau-based radiology group that Southern Illinois Healthcare hospitals and hospitals across the region use.

- The staff is well-trained. While the new equipment was being installed at the hospital imaging director Kimbra Schafer and Christina Deering were at Toshiba's imaging center in California for a week being trained on this powerful new diagnostic tool. They are not alone. Other radiology staff members include: George Bailey, Tom Paszkiewicz, Tammy Eisenhauer, Carrie Estes, Chantal Suhr, Hug Brianna, Stuart Kursty, Andrew Benbrook, Lauren Richardson, David Yackley and Brandon Hirsch.
