A Williamson County Grand Jury has indicted 19 people on drug charges.

In a press conference Monday afternoon, Williamson County State"s Attorney Brandon Zanotti called it "one of the biggest collective efforts of law enforcement" toward eradication of narcotics.

Zanotti said eight of those named in the indictments are now in custody, with the others being actively sought.

The 19 people are from 23 to 50 years old, with virtually all of the activity centered in Marion or Herrin.

The charges in the indictments range from Class 4 to Class X felonies, some with enhanced penalties for allegedly selling near schools and churches. The drugs involved include marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine and prescription drugs.

Flanked by representatives of the Illinois State Police, and the police chiefs and mayors of Marion and Herrin, Zanotti said drug prosecutions will be a priority of his State's Attorney's office. Putting a dent into narcotics sales, said Zanotti, "is a good example of what I set out to do."

Those named in the indictments have not been released as the arrests continue.
