Bargain? Pierce & Sons properties on the county's auction block until Oct. 3

Before it fell into Perry County's hands for back taxes, the Pierce & Sons Motor Sales property on North Hickory Street in Du Quoin had an asking price of $79,500.

A good location. High traffic count. And, a building that was maintained through the sales process, but not so much now.

The property is now listed among the 15 other properties in the latest Perry County trustee's catalog of surplus properties and bids are being taken on the building and a total of seven properties under and around it.

Years ago, the parcels supported the old Dairy Queen to the immediate south of Pierce & Sons, a small office building that housed an insurance company and Sunset Memorial Park cemetery offices and nearby a house. All have been torn down.

The properties are now being offered at county auction as follows: The Pierce showroom and shop area on three lots has a minimum bid of $638. Three vacant lots in another parcel have a minimum bid of $638. A seventh lot--by itself--has a minimum bid of $638. Bids are being taken in the county treasurer's office until Oct. 3. High bids should be awarded within about 72 hours after the bids are opened.

A catalog of the offerings is available for $5 from the treasurer.
