  • Rosiclare woman killed in Wednesday crash

  • A Rosiclare woman lost her life in a head-on crash with a semi-tractor trailer on state Route 34 1/4 mile south of Womble Road in southernmost Saline County.

  • A Rosiclare woman lost her life in a head-on crash with a semi-tractor trailer on state Route 34 1/4 mile south of Womble Road in southernmost Saline County.
    At 5:57 a.m. Wednesday a semi-tractor trailer driven by James N. Certain, 41, Equality, was driving south on state Route 34 when he observed animals on both sides of the roadway, according to a release from Illinois State Police District 19. Attempting to avoid one of the animals, Certain drove into the northbound lane. Cheryl R. Shaffer, 61, Rosiclare, was driving north and seeing the truck in the northbound lane. She moved into the southbound late when Certain also drove into the southbound lane and the vehicles collided, according to the release.
    Shaffer was pronounced dead at the scene by the Saline County Coroner’s Office.
    Certain was unhurt and was cited on a charge of improper lane usage.
    The crash remains under investigation by an ISP Crash Reconstruction Officer and
    an ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer have been assigned to the crash investigation.
    In addition, ISP District 19 was assisted at the crash scene by the Saline County Sheriff’s Department, Saline County EMS, Saline County Coroner’s Office, Carrier Mills Fire Department and Illinois Department of Transportation.
    The highway was closed about four hours.
