  • “You have to wash them and stuff,” said nine-year-old Emma Carlile speaking about her Brown-Swiss female Emmie and her first year of competition experience in the 4-H Cattle Show.
Emma is showing for the first time and is enjoying her experience with the local 4-H program. Emma also competed this year in the Rabbit and Visual Arts segments of the 4-H Shows.
Her brother Zane is showing one of the family cows named Danette and has competed for over three years.
“You have to brush them, wash their bodies and ears and comb their tails out,” Zane said. “We don't use fans to cool them off, nature does that and besides, fans spoil 'em. They want a fan all the time then.”
The Carlile children, from the Thompsonville-Galatia area, are showing their group of female Brown-Swiss cattle at the fair this year.
“You have to break them to halter by walking them around a lot at home,” Zane added.
Drake and Sara Wilson from Galatia are also first time competitors in the Cattle Show. Drake, who will be 11 years old in August, said he was excited about competing this year. Drake is showing a female Simmental named Kate and hopes to win his event.
“You gotta wash them, blow dry them, then brush them,” Drake said. “At home, you gotta lead them around a lot to get them used to being shown on a halter. And you have to learn how to use your stick to get them to position their feet and relax so they look good at the judging.”
His sister Sara is showing an Angus female named Cindy and says she is not nervous about competing for the first time. Sara also competed in the Horse show, Dog Show and General Show, preparing for the General Show two floral arrangements, one made of paper flowers and the other with button flowers.
“I'm going to stay active with 4-H,” Sara said. “We enjoy it a lot.”
