The LE&I personnel have created a list of mutually beneficial initiatives that meet the needs of all the agencies involved, according to a press release from the forest. Some of these include: Providing map data, hands-on training for global positioning units and search and rescue techniques.
The end goal is to strengthen response time and overall assistance to visitors who become lost or injured while building the partnership between the Shawnee National Forest and local government officials.
Administered by the USDA Forest Service, the Shawnee National Forest is one of 155 national forests nationwide. As the only national forest in Illinois, the Shawnee offers numerous avenues for connecting with the natural world through its 280,000 acres of varied landscape.
