  • Stewart looks to keep “competitive” schedule to help postseason chances

  • Jake Stewart has plenty of changes to his roster for the 2014-15 Harrisburg High School girl’s basketball team. The schedule however, won’t look that much different.
Stewart and the Bulldogs will have to replace four vital seniors, losing Ashley Ferrell, Lindsey Murray and Hanna Jones, as well as, Malayna Dougla on a team that won 20-plus games a year ago before losing in the IHSA Class 2A Sectional semifinal to Teutopolis at Casey-Westfield.
In an effort to get back and try to repeat on last year’s performance, Stewart has rolled a schedule he believes will not only test, but make his team better.
Most notably, team’s like Cairo, Hamilton County and Pope County are gone, but Stewart did up the ante against non-conference opponents such as Du Quoin, Carterville and an up-and-coming Gallatin County ballteam.
The Bulldogs will start the season at Galatia, before playing host to the 5-team Harrisburg Invitational that the third year head coach believes will be wide open.
In this year’s field will be West Frankfort, Eldorado, Carmi-White County and Anna-Jonesboro.
“In my opinion, our tournament will be the most competitive it’s been in a long time, if not ever.”
After traveling to West Frankfort on Dec. 2, Harrisburg will play host to Galatia (Dec. 3) and Du Quoin (Dec. 4). Stewart is still working on getting the Galatia game moved to Southeastern Illinois Community College, the site of last year’s contest.
Harrisburg goes on the road to Murphysboro (Dec. 10) and Carterville (Dec. 11), before returning to home to host Benton (Dec. 16) and Massac County (Dec. 18) prior to the Christmas break.
Harrisburg will spend a two-day trip at Fairfield, playing in the Merry Mule Tournament for a second straight year with teams like Robinson, Carmi-White County, Wayne City, Flora, Murphysboro and North Posey, Indiana.
To start the new year, Harrisburg will host Herrin (Jan. 6) before traveling to Gallatin County (Jan. 8).
“We’re excited about getting the opportunity to play Gallatin County. It’s got a regional rival feel to it and Gallatin County has a really good young group coming up. We’ve never played there, so that in itself, should be interesting.”
After hosting West Frankfort on January 13, Harrisburg will play in the Eldorado Lady Eagle Classic from Jan. 19-24 against the consisted field that includes Eldorado, Gallatin County, Mt. Carmel, Anna-Jonesboro, Goreville, Fairfield, Carmi-White County, Pope County and Vienna.
The home stretch of Harrisburg’s schedule will include three of the last four games on the road with trips at Massac County (Jan. 27), at Benton (Jan. 29) and at Herrin (February 5). The home finale for Harrisburg will be against Murphysboro on Feb. 2.
Page 2 of 2 - “I feel like our schedule is just as tough as it was a year ago,” Stewart said. “The sole purpose it to not only get us better, but help us prepare for postseason play.”
