  • The reigning Illinois Class 2A state champion in the girls’ pole vault, added more prestige to her title over the weekend.
Harrisburg’s Lindsey Murray cleared 12-feet-9.5 at the USA Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Bloomington, Indiana to bring home another national title.
Murray, who cleared 13-feet-4, at the IHSA State Finals back in May said she was blessed to have this opportunity to showcase her skills against some of the nations elite pole vaulters.
Murray beat out 10 other competitors, including Kristen Denk of North Roylaton, Ohio and Mackenzie Shell of Port Huron, Michigan, who all cleared 12-3.5.
“I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the support of my family and the Harrisburg community. I cannot thank Ron Brachear enough who has helped me along to not only become the pole vaulter I am today, but the person. Also, without God, none of this would be possible.
“I had some of the same nerves going into this meet like I did for the state finals. There were a lot of girls who had higher personal records than mine, but the conditions were favorable for me, just like I like them, hot, sunny and a strong trail wind.”
Next up for Murray will be a trip to Humble, Texas in late July where she’ll compete at the USA Junior Olympics.
“I definitely can’t wait,” Murray said. “ A lot of my family is in Texas, I love Texas, it’s something that I can’t explain, but I’m really looking forward to it.
“When I went last year, I knew I could place, but as far as expectations of winning, they weren’t there. This year, I want to win it all.”
