  • Leona M. Hyers, 86 of 1325 Barnett St., Harrisburg, died 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at her residence.

  • Leona M. Hyers, 86 of 1325 Barnett St., Harrisburg, died 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at her residence.
    Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills. Visitation will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Bernie Cowgill will officiate. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
    She was born on July 1, 1927, in the Walnut Grove Community, near Harrisburg, to the late Mitto and Grace (Holmes) Fitzgerald.
    She married Charles (Kool Aid) Hyers on July 12, 1942, and he preceded in death on Jan. 4, 2002.
    She was a member of the Walnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church near Harrisburg.
    She is survived by a son: Charlie (Kathy) Hyers of Harrisburg; three grandchildren: Chris (Robin) Hyers of Galatia; Heather (Ray) Boon of Harrisburg and Chad McCabe of Harrisburg; seven great-grandchildren: Isabella Hyers, Aaron Davis, Autumn Moore, Logan Boon, Noah Boon, McKenna Boon and Harley McCabe; two brothers: Leon Fitzgerald and John (Madge) Fitzgerald both of Carrier Mills; and sister: Phyllis (John) Murphy of Ozark.
    She was preceded in death by four brothers: George Fitzgerald, Floyd Fitzgerald, Clarence Fitzgerald and Harvey Fitzgerald; three sisters: Francis King, Mamie McAnnally and Elsie Eilene Fitzgerald; sister-in-law: Brenda Fitzgerald; and two brothers-in-law: Charles King and William Hyers.
    The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses of Hospice of Southern Illinois who cared for her, Alonna, Sage and Cheryl.
