  • It’s one more time for the last time.
Ashley Ferrell thought her playing days for Harrisburg were over after a sectional semifinal loss to Teutopolis at Casey-Westfield back in March.
The bitter-sweet moment for the outgoing Bulldog senior will come this weekend when she represents her school one last time at the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game Saturday at the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan.
“I get to put everything into it because I really didn’t know if the sectional game was my last one or not,” Ferrell said. “I guess you really never know, but I know now that this will be the last high school game I’ll ever be a part of and am really looking forward to it.”
Among the things Ferrell is looking forward too before the Southeast Illinois Community College recruit reports in early July will be playing against what he calls, “really, really good competition and a lot of different kind of competition.”
Ferrell will also have the chance to team up with southern Illinois talent like Carterville’s Sidney Smith, Goreville’s Haley Darnell and Century’s Morgan Atherton.
“I’m really excited to get the chance to play again, play with girls that I haven’t really ever had the opportunity to play with or against and just have fun at this level one more time.”
The Harrisburg High School Female Athlete of the Year for 2014 was named to the All South Team, as well as, being named to the Southern Illinois River-To-River Ohio All-Conference Team. Ferrell was named to All-Tournament Teams at the Harrisburg Preview Tournament, the Eldorado Mid-Winter Classic and the Fairfield Merry Mule Tournament.
She was a IHSA Class 2A All State Honorable Mention player and was a 4th Team IBCA player, as well as, being named to the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette Honorable Mention Team.
Ferrell ended her senior season with 494 points, putting her third on the school’s all-time scoring list at 1389. She had a season-high 29 points against Cairo and tied a school record for made 3-pointers in a game with eight (against West Frankfort) and holds the school record for most 3-pointers in a career with 231 and in a year 96.
This will be Harrisburg head coach Jake Stewart’s first participant in the IBCA All-Star game. It’s believed that former Bulldog greats Laura Thompson and Cyd Mitchell also played in the game.
Stewart is looking forward to his All-Star shining against some of the state’s best.
“I’m really happy for Ashley and not only what she was able to accomplish this year, but that her accomplishments were recognized by her peers. I know she’ll hold her own against some of the state’s best competition this weekend, but I also know that she’ll represent the Harrisburg basketball tradition to the best of her ability.”

“It’s pretty cool because for me it’s a sense of accomplishment and people have recognized how hard I’ve worked. I’m still working hard and my ability keeps improving the past four years.”
