  • Mary Ellen Hish, age 103 of Harrisburg, passed away at 4:50 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at Harrisburg Medical Center.

  • Mary Ellen Hish, age 103 of Harrisburg, passed away at 4:50 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
    Mary was born on Friday, April 7, 1911, in Gallatin County, to the late Otto and Nancy (Dillard) Kleiner. She married John F. Hish on May 5, 1930, and he preceded her in death of July 8, 1985. Mary worked as a self employed seamstress and was a member of the Christian Church in Dale.
    Mary is survived by her daughter: Helen Baker of Harrisburg; half brother: Arthur Kleiner of Salem Wis.; daughter-in-law: Louise Hish, of Dale; five grandchildren: Mary Shepherd of Chapmanville, W.Va., Jeanne Underwood of Marion, Greg and wife Michelle Baker of Harrisburg, Jeff and wife Danielle Baker of Harrisburg, and Julie and husband Michael Brown of Dale; 10 great-grandchildren: Andrea and husband John McCune of West Virginia, Josh Shepherd of West Virginia, Jennifer Underwood of Marion, Cody and wife Anntoinette Underwood of Harrisburg, Nicole and husband Brad Storms of Harrisburg, Courtney and husband Daniel Johnston of Chandler, Ind., Boyd and Ethan Baker of Harrisburg and Bryanna and Kaitlyn Martin of Dale; nine great-great-grandchildren survive; along with several nieces; nephews; and cousins.
    Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters: Lawrence, Bill, Mildred, John, Helen and Kathryn; a son: John L. Hish; son-in-law: Don Baker; and grandson-in-law: Terry Shepherd.
    Services for Mary were 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, 2014, at Reed Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Keith Ital officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Ridgway. Visitation was noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at Reed Funeral Chapel. For those who wish, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the American Heart Association and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
